Support for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Assault
Montrose
Counseling Center provides a full range of services to survivors of same gender
intimate partner violence and sexual assault. The program that MCC offers
is targeted to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered populations, however
anyone who meets the eligibility requirements will be provided the opportunity
to receive services. There is limited grant funding for sexual assault and
sexual abuse survivors and for those not grant eligible, services can be provided
on a sliding scale fee.
According to the "Houston Area Health Care Needs Assessment For Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Women", conducted by the Lesbian Health
Initiative with technical assistance by MCC, 30% of the respondents indicated
that they had been in violent relationships and 42% stated that they had been
sexually assaulted. The prevalence rate for gay men in violent relationships
is roughly the same, according to national reports.
In response to these startling statistics, MCC developed a program designed
to address the issue of same gender intimate partner violence and sexual assault
in the most comprehensive way possible. Services include individual and group
support and case management services which are designed to assist the individual
in linking up with other service providers in order to obtain the highest
quality of care. In addition, masters level counselors are available to provide
on-going training to multi-disciplinary agencies in an effort to educate the
community about the reality of same gender intimate partner violence and sexual
assault.
